At Kearney, you have to read better and faster than you do in fifth grade. Also, in middle school you have to read a lot! It is fun to read, so that's why I really focused on becoming a better reader this year in fifth grade. Now when I go to middle school I will be ready. Plus, it is good to read... it is an important skill to have for more than just going to school. I will use this skill the rest of my life and the better I am at it, the more successful I can be!Unknownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10824473903672864651noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5238784119773292871.post-19074845858224174472012-04-18T13:05:00.002-06:002012-04-18T13:05:20.319-06:00Bryan's Explanatory Paragraph

The skills that I learned in fifth grade that I will continue to use in middle school are finding the area and the angles of a rectangle and a triangle. Also finding the area of a rectangle is important because if the teacher gives me some problems I wouldn't be able to figure it out. Also, finding the angles of a triangle is important. In sixth grade, I wouldn't be able to finish the work that the sixth grade teacher gives me if I didn't have these skills. I would never finish it. This skill will help me in real world situations too. If I'm trying to find the area of a room, a yard, the playground or the school, knowing the formulas and how to use them will come in very handy. Everyone has worked so hard this year to create, edit and produce their films, and I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing each of your masterpieces. As a class, we've worked really hard on writing, learning and singing our bully song. I'm really proud of the work that each of you has put into this particular film. Special thanks to Lobo's mom, Regina, for her inspiration for the song :) Also, thanks to Mrs. Stork for her use of the iPad, Garage Band and general know-how about the movie-making process! I cannot wait to see the final product :)
I'd like for each of you to comment on the FilmFest process and how it went for you. Your writing homework this week was to discuss your idea for your film. After reflecting on the process of making your movie, what are you most proud of? What would you do differently if you could redo your film this year? Will you make another film in middle school or high school?

The story is told by a ten-year-old boy. He loves to go on adventures with his dog Mcgrowl. First, a guy and his wife come to Cedar Springs. Their names are Mel Munchick and his wife’s name is Von Vleck. Mcgrowl, Tomas, and his best friend Violet become Mel’s friend. Mel tries to become mayor and he succeeds. Then Mel tricks Mcgrowl, Thomas, and Violet into a dirt hole where Mel used to live. The theme of this story is to crusade for what you believe in. My favorite character is Mcgrowl. I like him because he is funny. He is funny by throwing and catching his own Frisbee. I recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs and adventure stories.

By: Angel RosalesElizabeth Hopkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18048924434987004704noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5238784119773292871.post-45993730088338845382011-09-15T13:32:00.001-06:002012-02-29T14:44:50.651-07:00Danny and Cheyenne Share Mind MapsElizabeth Hopkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18048924434987004704noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5238784119773292871.post-60318550556459539342011-09-15T12:10:00.001-06:002012-02-29T14:45:12.782-07:00Lobo and Leslie Share Mind MapsElizabeth Hopkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18048924434987004704noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5238784119773292871.post-81676654967831139702011-08-19T10:02:00.004-06:002011-08-19T11:11:24.630-06:00First Week of SchoolDuring our first week of 5th grade,we've practiced the procedures and routines, learned about the curriculum, and even tried our hand at gardening! (Video to come!) We're excited for our last year of elementary school and even created our own class rules!

Be respectful
Be prepared
Be on task

These rules will encourage us to practice R.O.S.E. and become real leaders and role models in our school. Here is our first video of the school year, in which we show you our assisted reading strategies.

Overflowing rivers in northeastern Australia cut off major highways, destroyed crops and flooded more than 20 cities and towns in the state of Queensland. At least 200,000 people were affected by the floodwaters, which peaked on January 5.

The flood damage will cost Australia billions of dollars. "This is a major natural disaster, and recovery will take a significant amount of time," said Australia's Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.

The disaster began on December 25, when a cyclone hit Australia's northeast coast. Days of heavy rain caused rivers to overflow. The flood spread across an area the size of France and Germany. In the coastal city of Rockhampton, the river rose to 30 feet. Residents were warned to stay away from floodwaters. The fast-moving water was strong enough to sweep cars away. Snakes and crocodiles were spotted in the water. The floodwaters could take a month to dry up.

The flood is having an impact around the world. Queensland exports half the world's coal that is used to make steel. Most of the state's coalfields are unable to operate, forcing a rise in coal prices.Elizabeth Hopkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18048924434987004704noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5238784119773292871.post-80105200416474997472010-10-03T18:17:00.002-06:002010-10-03T18:19:44.549-06:00It Takes TalentOn September 30, our 5th grade class acted out the Reader's Theater selection for Theme one, It Takes Talent! Here is our final version. This cross-curricular project had students researching, writing, reading, editing, and creating, all using tools of the 21st century. As these students prepare for fifth grade, I'd like them to reflect on some things:

What was the hardest part about this project?
What was the most fun?
What did you learn?
How do you feel about the final product you created with your group?
Are you looking forward to similar projects next year in 5th grade?Elizabeth Hopkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18048924434987004704noreply@blogger.com2
