What book are you reading?

Hi Everyone!

My class and I would like to know what people are reading these days, either in school or at home. We are reading some really great stories in our class right now. Some 8th grade students are reading a story about a Native American boy who is trying to reconnect with his roots. Another group of students is reading about the Chinese migration to San Francisco at the beginning of the 20th century. Still others are focusing their attention on a book about a girl struggling with concepts of race and identity. We are learning so many wonderful things from our books and each other that we wanted to ask you: What are you reading?

I am reading Everest by Gordon Korman. This book is about four kids who like to climb mountain. They go to the top of the mountain because they enjoy the challenge. I think it is a good book to read because in the middle of the story it is so sad. The main characters of the book are Cicero, Dominic, Sami, and Joey. I like all the main characters because they are so different from each other and interesting. Overall, I would rate this book 5 stars.

I'm reading "Witches Abroad" by Terry Pratchett - it's set on a world that is flat, and lies on the back of four giant elephants, who stand on the back of a gigantic turtle that swims through space. It's hilarious, not just because the characters spend all their time arguing, but because it does such a good job of making fun of fairy tales. I give it five stars.

I am reading "Yes: 50 scientifically proven ways to be persuasive." I am not too far into the book, but so far it is really great. The book is designed to help the readers become more persuasive in their work, school, or everyday life. It would be a really great book for a student or teacher to read.

Hi Liz,

I just finished The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. The book highlights the importance of cherishing each day with your loved ones. It also imparts other little pieces of wisdom that he has learned throughout his life and hopes to pass on to his children (and know has passed on to millions of readers). You probably know the background about his illness... Bub is reading How To Wow, which talks about how to give memorable and informative business presentations.

I am reading Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt. It is an Economics book, with a twist. He argues that many apparent mysteries of everyday life don't need to be so strange. These events can be connected and made even more fascinating by asking the right questions and drawing connections through use of data.

A quick example or two, shows how incentives drive people and most of the time the conventional wisdom turns to be “wrong” when incentives are in place. Also, that “conventional wisdom” is often wrong and by doing some research to look from a different perspective, we can find out that what we thought is not always true.

After reading this book, students especially, would realize what Sumo wrestlers and teachers have in common - you'll find that one very interesting!

I just finished a great book entitled "Big Russ and Me" by the late journalist Tim Russert. Tim was born into a large Catholic family in Buffalo, New York. It tells about his Dad, Big Russ, and all the sacrifices he made to raise and educate his family in the 1950's. One of his jobs was a garbage collector!

I was raised in a large Catholic family too and many of Tim Russert's experiences and mine are the same. It was a fun and easy read!

Thank you for your posting. it was really interesting. it sounds pretty cool. I'm also reading a book called Hostage about a girl that gets angry with her father and decides to go do whatever she want too, but a stranger comes in a car and when the stranger is talking to her another person comes from the back and gets her by the mouth and kidnapped her but that's all know because I'm still reading it.

Maria G. I am reding a book called Hostage. I like this book because it is about two men that steal a girl. This is a warning to the readers: Don't talk to strangers
like the character of the girl, even if she is brave. The name of the character is Angela.

Hi Victor, my name is Jose and I read the book, "Two Tricky Tales." These are two stories that teach lessons to the reader because they are fables. I enjoyed them, but now I want to read something harder. It was a very easy book to read. What book are going to read next? Next time I would like to read a book about soccer.

Well since I'm pregnant I'm ready lots of different pregnancy and parenting books but I'm also reading "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. Greg Mortenson traveled to Pakistan to climb the second highest mountain, K2, but several people in his group were injured and so he helped his group return down the mountain safely however, after his friends were rescued he got lost and was helped by people living in a small village of Korpe. Greg became very attached to the people of Korpe and made it his life mission to help build a school there for the child. I'm not terribly far into the book but it is my understanding that Greg went on and continues to work on raising money to build schools in rural locations of Pakistan, and surrounding areas. I am reading a book called Gargoyle which is about a burn victim recovering in a hospital who is visited by a woman who claims to have known him, and cared for his burns, in a previous life. He is released from the hospital into her care, much to the disapproval of the doctors who think she is schizophrenic. It is a very strange book and I have no idea what is going happen at the end.

I am doing a stint substitute teaching at one of Lansing's Catholic Junior High Schools. We just finished reading awonderful story. The first, "Top Man" is a wonderful example of historical fiction. The author actually was involved in climbing K3 (Mt. Everest) and wrote a story about the determination and courage and issues facing him and the team of climbers. The characters come to life as the reader learns how dangerous and treacherous such a task as attacking K3 really is.

I just finished up a substitute teaching job at St. Gerard School here in Lansing, Michigan. With the 7th graders, we read a wonderful story by Bill Littlefield called, "Nate 'Tiny' Archibald" which is the true story of a wonderful college/professional basketball player. Tiny wasn't that tall, but he had amazing determination. He worked so hard so that his grades would be good enough to allow him to play bball on his high school team. As a result, Texas Western University (now University of Texas El Paso) gave him a bball scholarship and he helped take the Boston Celtics to one of their world championships. He retired from the sport, went back to college and works helping children/adults in the Harlem area of New York City. It's a wonderful story about courage and determination.

Hello students! I am one of Ms. Springer's friends from college and I teach English Literature in Ohio to 9th and 11th graders. I am currently reading Three Cups of Tea, the true story of the man who builds schools in rural Pakistan and heads up the Central Asia Institute to do the same in other rural less developed countries. What I like about it the most is it is all about finding how you want to live your life and make a difference---and achieving those goals. I also just read The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch that was fantastic as well. Very good life lessons in there about "how to achieve your childhood dreams." My students and I are currently reading To Kill a Mockingbird (my 9th graders) and my 11th graders are working on early British Literature like the original King Arthur myths. Ms. Alison Mizen, Cleveland Ohio.
