Surviving in the Wild

This week in Time for Kids Magazine, we read a story about endangered species and conservation efforts around the world.

We learned about the Sumatran rhinos, of which there are less than 300 left in the world! They have become so endangered because of illegal hunting and habitat loss. These large mammals have a very specific diet, including a sap-covered fruit, and zookeepers and conservationists are working hard to restore the rhino population in captive-breeding programs in zoos around the United States.

We also studied the California condors, which nearly went extinct in the 1980s. Condors are scavengers that feed off of the remains of dead animals. At the time, hunters used lead bullets to kill whatever animals they were hunting. Scientists and researchers began to realize that the birds were being poisoned by the lead used in the bullets that killed the animals the condors were eating! In 1982, only 22 California condors remained in the world. But with the help of dedicated specialists, the bird population has grown to more than 350. In 2007, Congress passed a law that banned the use of lead bullets where condors live, making it safer for the condors to survive in the wild.

The article goes on to say that it has to be the responsibility of everyone to take care of our planet, our animals, and their habitats. They use the expression, "it takes a village." We want to know what you think. Why is it important to save species from becoming extinct? If it takes a village to do so, what can we do to help? What will the benefits be?

We think that animals dont need to becomeextinct. We are trying to help the animals. It's sad that animals are going extinct. We can help the animals by giving them food, water, and don't let them feel sad.

I think it is important to save species from becoming extinct so that our children could see them too. Also because without animals in the world the world is not complete.Inorder to save the endangerd species we should work together and stop hunting animals down.If we do that animals will not get extinct and when were old people we will see the same wonderful animals.

speices deserve to live just like us. We could help by not killing them and give them a home. They get to live like us and it will make us not a species killers and a healthy world with animals.

It is important for them to be saved from harm and danger. We can keep in the zoo,or we could put them in somewhere they couldnt escape.Well the benefits are getting killed by people, getting eaten, and getting shot by the people.

It is not right to kill animals that are endangered. And if we kill them god will get mad with us. People will sell all of the good body parts from the animals so they can get a lot of money. It is just wrong to kill poor, poor animals. People should appreciate these animals because they are all part of nature.

- I love how you are all reading about endangered animals. It's so important that you spread the word! The more people who know how you feel about animals becoming extinct, the more people will become more involved in helping to save many of these animals. YOU can help make a difference!

Have you looked into what happens in the food chain if an animal or a certain species becomes extinct?
